Today during my DC Photojournalism trip class we met virtually with 2011 alum, Emily Bogle. who is an editor at NPR. She was one of the very first people to get into photo editing from the photojournalism program. She had gotten an internship at NPR and has been there ever since. We also met virtually with Margot Mezvinsky who works a lot with the video team as well as photographs, photo editing, art directing, illustrations, NPR's Instagram account and making sure the strategy makes sense there. Keren Carrion is the third individual we met with who is short form video producer and studied Photojournalism at Georgia University.

Keren describes a short from video process: takes an hour clip and shortens it to sixty seconds. In order to get the video cut that short they have scripting meetings to discuss what would be important to include while being concise. Need to consider the visuals and variety. This is not documentary style video it is more for Instagram reels and TikTok. They want to do well on socials. They have a quick turn around of four days including the scripting, shooting and editing.

Keren mentioned how she did not consider how many hours go into a making of a minute long video. She was surprised how rigorous how serious they take a sixty second video. She recommends thinking about the audience first. Consider what is going to be the hook visually.

Each of them talked about the various projects they are working on and approximate working on around ten at a time.

There were various key takeaways from our meeting.

-Ethics and Law class important! The material is useful and comes in handy when photo editing.

-Fall NPR photo editor opening will be coming up! They are looking for:

  • someone with awareness and interested in photo editing

  • do not need to have photo editing experience

  • someone aware of the need for visual variety (wide, medium, tight)

  • sense of editing colleges/peers work (like to see examples of that)

  • visual literacy

  • photo editing portfolio a plus

  • understanding of what makes a good image selection/ package

-NPR advice:

  • pay attention to work NPR does

  • apply for the internship

  • connect/ reach out to the editors

-When a photographer pitches a story they usually ask the photographer to write a short introduction(200-300) words of partially your pitch and why this is relevant now.

-This work is a lot and self motivation is important

-What is going to be most eye catching...

-They work a lot with freelance photographers and they have a good day rate plus milage reimbursement and expenses

Emily suggests that doing the work that you enjoy doing is important

I remember meeting with individuals who work for NPR while visiting NYC with my Photojournalism class last semester. Their multimedia work and social media platforms are impressive. I see myself possibly working for this publication because of the multimedia focus and the type of stories they focus on.
