My name is Kelci Sherman. I currently live in Rochester, New York. I am a fourth year Rochester Institute of Technology student majoring in Photojournalism.

My fascination with photography began when I was three years old, when I first learned what a disposable camera was and later how it could save memories. My love for photojournalism developed after I took a class from an award-winning photographer and travel writer. He inspired me to explore various cultures and tell their stories through compelling visuals as he has done throughout his work; by documenting them with a focus on educating the younger generations to make a lasting difference. I have a special interest in traveling, learning, and interacting with diverse peoples to tell their stories.

Recently, I worked with Rochester Teen Empowerment organization on a project centered on how Rochester’s urban renewal in the 1960s affected the residents of the Corn Hill neighborhood, previously known as the Third Ward. I helped photograph and interview the residents who were affected and those working for the organizations who have taken part in the displacement of those residents. Those interviews were edited by Rashaad Parker, the Community Outreach Manager at Flower City Arts Center, who combined archives, stills, films and writings from the 1940s through the early 1970s which was screened in the “Clarissa Uprooted'' exhibit at RIT City Art Space from June 3rd-July 24th.

For over a year, I have been photographing and interviewing people at various rallies and protests in the city of Rochester involved in Black Lives Matter rallies, pro-choice/pro-life rights protests, and anti-vaccine mandate protests. I have been exploring the diversity of people that attend these protests alongside what causes these individuals to protest. I am documenting this because I find it important to share the perspectives of individuals' beliefs on issues like civil rights within a community. I believe it is in the power of the people in a community to make change happen.

Following my graduation, my goal is to work for a major publication as a multimedia storyteller.
